How Versatile is a Boom Lift?

A boom lift is one of the most versatile pieces of access equipment available. This type of machine is available in a number of variants; you may have heard it called by a number of different names, such as aerial work platform (AWP), elevating work platform (EWP) and aerial device. These machines are used to reach elevated areas that would otherwise be inaccessible. Let’s take a closer look at how boom lifts work and how they are used.

A Brief Boom Lift Primer

A boom lift can reach a wide variety of areas, so it’s more adaptable and versatile than some other pieces of access equipment such as a scissor lift. They are easy to maneuver into position, and the boom can be move in a vertical and horizontal manner to reach the required working area. A boom lift is an excellent choice if you need a machine that can bend around obstructions and operate in tighter locations. Many boom lifts have built-in generators with electrical outlets on the working platform to power tools and other equipment. A boom lift is an expensive piece of equipment; it requires regular maintenance and dedicated storage space. For this reason, many businesses hire their boom lifts because it makes better financial sense.

The 2 Boom Lift Types

Broadly speaking, there are a couple of different types of boom lifts to choose from; they are the telescoping and articulating boom lift:

The Telescopic Boom Lift: This machine has a single extendable arm that can stretch out over a wider area. It requires more working space, and it can typically reach higher than an articulating boom lift. This type of boom lift is well suited to lifting workers to taller construction areas or for utility work.

This is an example of an Articulating Boom.

The Articulating Boom Lift: The arm on this machine is segmented, and each section can be extended as required. This makes this boom lift very useful for reaching around protrusions and curved surfaces. It typically has a smaller footprint than the telescoping boom lift, and this makes it ideal for tighter or narrow working areas.

Which is the Best Boom Lift?

Each type of boom lift is better suited to different applications, but there is some overlap, and when you need to choose between the two, consider the following four factors.

Indoor or Outdoor Work: An electric boom lift is often the best choice because it has no fuel emissions, and it has a quieter operation. A diesel boom lift would be a great choice for heavier outdoor work and a dual gas/propane powered machine can be used for both indoor and outdoor work.

Rough Terrain Power: A diesel powered boom lift is a better option for outdoor work on rough terrain, but you will need a machine that will be stable on uneven surfaces.

The Machine Weight: Always consider the weight of the machine before you hire it, or the boom lift may get stuck on certain indoor floor surfaces or in the mud outside.

Measure the Work Area: As we’ve seen, there different types and sizes of boom lift available for hire. So, make sure you measure the area carefully, include and entryways or narrow spaces that the machine will need to navigate to reach and leave the working area.
